Vicenza High School wasn't really the type of school to have the stereotypical cliques and groups, considering how small it was. With a student body of about 300, however, groups formed all the same--although they were considerably smaller and less specific than large school counterparts.

There was the chess club, of course, and the 'scene kids', with their crazy hair and don't-give-a-damn-attitude. Jocks, rappers, cheerleaders, over-achievers, student council, and the 'beautiful people' pretty much stuck to their respective social scenes. Then, there was a table for geeks of all sorts.

Melissa, by far the most well known member, showed off a sporty haircut and an infectious smile. She was an interesting girl who had both rigorous discipline and a sense of adventure. She was an avid reader of manga, writer of Yaoi, and artist. She didn't seek anyone's approval, choosing instead to follow her own path. Her presence in the school was the subject of much controversy; she was openly bisexual, and didn't 'come out of the closet' so much as she exploded out of it--and some people were bothered by that. Well, nobody that mattered cared either way, which was enough for her.

Stephanie, a blond-haired girl with a passion for videogames and environmentalism, was an outspoken member of the group. She was mellow but opinionated, arguing her points offhandedly and with a smile. She wore casual, comfortable clothes; adorned with peace signs and rainbows, funny messages and cartoon characters. She loved all manner of music and her favorite videogames were diverse, from Nintendo classics to the latest stuff out of X-box.  She didn't let 'the man' keep her down, although her friends gently teased her about her tree-hugging ways.

Colleen was a fairly recent addition, stylish and feminine, despite her protests to the contrary. She wore skirts and jewelry, liked boys (especially one bushy-browed fellow) but still managed to enjoy anime on the side. She was the baby of the group, and everyone else strived to corrupt her, one perverted comment at a time. She had a huge crush on a certain boy with certain eyebrows and a certain someone never stopped teasing her about it. Colleen was, quite simply, adorable.

Anna was Melissa's younger sister--although you might not guess it from how much taller she was that her older sibling, much to Melissa's displeasure. She had long, purple-streaked blond hair and wore just enough make-up to compliment her features, although her slightly forceful nature pretty much demolished her feminine aura. She and her sister got into violent spats and arguments just often enough to hinder any conversation that might have taken place otherwise,  although the two got along for the most part. Her volatile nature may have had something to do with a bit of sibling rivalry.

Jarra was a soft-spoken girl closest to Anna, but adored by everyone at the table. She was to go-to person for all things Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and Star Wars, as well as other nerdy shows. This earned her a certain amount of respect from everyone at the table, especially in such debates as 'Who's Better, Legolas or Aragon?' and 'Why is Luke Skywalker Such a Pansy?'. She was easily the most sane person at the table, not prone to outbursts or maniacal laughter like some others.

Mae was ridiculous, cheerful, and prone to making bad jokes. Her friends seemed find her funny regardless of the actual quality of her humor, to her endless amusement. A bit insecure and self-effacing, she reveled in her friends company and loved them all. She was a jack of all trades, dabbling in art, anime, manga, and videogames, never missing an obscure reference or quote, balancing everyone's interests. She was hardly ever seen without her bright blue 'laughing man' hoodie and felt naked without it.

Lastly, a shortish girl with the name of Katarina, or Caterina, or some other intelligibly-spelled word graced the table with her presence. No one was really close friends with her, but she stuck around for lack of anyone else to hang out with. It might sound a bit cruel, but the others occasionally planned ways of getting rid of her--with mostly non-lethal methods. For a person with such a fragile and tenuous place in the group, she certainly was annoying and simple-minded enough to warrant a good amount of dislike towards her. Perhaps Mae was the most antagonistic against her, because she had once made her little brother cry.

It didn't matter right now, of course--Katereena was absent that day.

At the moment, everyone else sat together at the aforementioned lunch table, in their designated seats. Mae was wolfing down some half-boiled pasta like it was the best thing in the world--it wasn't, and she'd eat anything, honestly. Steph picked through her bag lunch, not an attractive meal, but infinitely more delicious than school food. Everyone was engaged deep in conversation.

"The shortness adds to his appeal! It's sexy!" Melissa exclaimed loudly, gesturing to a half finished fan art of Edward Elric. Colleen shook her head 'no'.

"I wouldn't ever date a guy shorter than me," she said, twisting uncomfortably in her medieval dress, a costume she wore to fulfill her English class's assignment.

"We ALL know who you want to date, Colleen," Mae admonished between bites of noodle and wiggling her eyebrows, "And I think the shortness is only a plot element. You know--because of the failed transmutation and all."

Always practical, Jarra jumped into the conversation.

"I don't think the author took his appearance into consideration when she decided his height," Jarra reasoned.

"I don't think it's so Edo can play the submissive uke role like Melissa wants," Anna said, smirking at Melissa's indignant expression.

"I don't think I care about any of this," Steph said, laughing at the absurdity of the conversation.

"I don't think I liked this pasta," Mae sulked off-topically, frowning at her now-empty trey.

Everyone stared at her for a moment.

"What?" she asked, blinking and twitching nervously. She looked like a cross between an owl and a startled meerkat.

The table laughed for moment at her expense, sharing a look that said 'then why did she eat all of it?' and 'oh, another Mae moment'.

Mae sputtered incoherently and attempted to dodge a one-armed hug from Stephanie as everyone watched with matching smiles.

And then the world exploded.

Not in a 'fiery, nuclear weapon, hellfire explosion' sort of way, but one of blinding light. For a full five seconds, the entire cafeteria was absorbed into a state of eerily silent nothingness, a void with no movement or color, sound or sight.

Finally, after what had seemed like an eternity, existence fizzled back. The group stared at each other dazedly, too shell-shocked to even form a thought.

"Okay, what the hell?" Melissa asked at last, standing nervously and walking to the glass doors leading outside, pressing a palm to the transparent surface. Mae followed quickly, Stephanie also stood, and finally the entire table shuffled sluggishly over to see what had occurred.

The sky looked broken, at a cursory glance--streaked with fault line cracks and rents tearing open the once blue atmosphere--but after a closer look, what looked like breaks in the sky were actually fluctuating bars of energy, crisscrossing the airy expanse like bands of white lightning.

Melissa crossed the threshold of the doors, perhaps the most courageous of the group, Mae clinging to her black hoodie like a frightened kitten. Stephanie took a deep breath and exited the school as well. It took only a few moments for everyone else to assemble themselves outside.

Anna pointed at the spot where, distantly, the spikes of lightning-like energy congregated together at a single point.

"Look at that! Holy crap, is that a person?"

It was.

And they were getting closer, the ever-expanding void opening up behind them.

"Ahahahahahahahaaa!" the person screamed, floating weightlessly above the group of teenagers, light filtering from his fingertips.

And it was a guy, apparently… although the hairstyle, a fancy emo-cut with blond hair dipping over one eye, and a girly figure gave him a decidedly feminine appearance. The voice was masculine enough, however, and decidedly evil-sounding.

"Oh my god," said Mae, stunned.

"T-that's impossible. It's n-not possible, right?" Colleen questioned shakily. No one could answer--it wasn't possible, of course, but it was happening. The void stretched outwards, encompassing the entire sky, tendrils of pure light beginning to touch the earth around them.

"Oh my god," Mae repeated.

"We're all going to die," Steph deadpanned, drooping a little in the wake of the blinding aura.

"Hey, you! Tell us what's going on!" Melissa demanded, totally unaffected by the situation. Beside her, Mae stood trembling, her eyes comically wide and mouth open.

"OH MY GOD--" she yelled, and the man finally looked down. He grinned, somehow managing to expose every tooth in his mouth.

"Heh heh heh," the man giggled, sounding a bit demented, as he landed in front of the group, "Look around you. What do you see?"

"Uh, not much of anything," Jarra answered mechanically, and she was right--the void covered most of the visible world, lapping at the edges of the group and enclosing them in a circle of nothingness.

"Ahaha! That is correct! Behold the glory that is the Seizure!" he bellowed, gesturing wildly.

"I think I'm about to have a seizure," muttered Anna, wincing.

"I think he means like, 'to seize a place'," Mae suggested.

But the man had lost interest in that topic, and he strode forward. His hair was blond, and he wore an interesting black suit--an interesting mix of yakuza and playboy. His tidiness was immaculate save for his tie, which hung causally across his neck. A pair of wrap-around sunglasses obscured his eyes and reflected the expansive whiteness.

His smile was grossly wide--but suddenly, his expression changed.

"Ami?" he asked with a certain amount of longing in his voice, and sounding forlorn.

He looked straight at Colleen, and the question seemed to be directed at her. The entire group froze, unable to comprehend,

"Uh, me?" she asked, taking a step back.

Faster than thought, the man zoomed forward, grabbing Colleen around the waist and shooting up into the sky. She screamed, kicking at the man's shins, and a bolt of light enveloped them both, leaving no trace of either.

"COLLEEN!" the group yelled in panic, but there was no time to even to even digest Colleen's sudden kidnapping. Around them, the light encroached further.

A streak of the harsh lightning struck, catching Anna and Jarra in an illuminating flash. For a brief moment, their silhouettes were visible as dark, human-shaped spots in convulsed poses. And then the were gone.

Melissa ran quickly to the spot where her sister and friend had been seconds earlier, an expression of horror taking her face. The blinding flash came again, and the place she stood was empty.

The small circle of normal ground contracted further, and the remaining two girls were left to the small space.

Stephanie looked at Mae, face drawn in a rare expression of fear. Mae shivered, breathing rapidly, sweat pouring down her face.

"I--"

The light came. Steph's eyes, wide and afraid, pleaded. Mae reached for her with her left arm--

But Stephanie was already gone--

And then came a searing pain, where Mae's hand was---

No, where it should be----

And-----

Then------

All was white.
Aaand, the first chapter. It really was easier than drawing a comic. Sorry.

This is the story of my friends and I. Sorry if that's lame.

And sorry if the characterization of you guys is off--I haven't seen you in AGES.

PLEASE DON'T BE OFFENDED.
